Constraint

Medium: Oil Paint on cardboard and canvas

(12 in x 12 in)

Constraint is a companion piece to Liberty and is meant to represent the complete opposite of freedom, subjection.

My question for this piece was “how can I create a sense of stagnation and isolation while also keeping with the same format of my piece, Liberty?”  This piece is a companion to the previously mentioned work, Liberty. Constraint shares in Liberty’s depiction of a singular animal with additional limbs on a circular canvas with silhouetted hands as repeating elements; however, Constraint is blue and portrays the hands as more entrapping rather than freeing.
